Emergency/Safety Safety Drill Information
Below are descriptions of the four main safety drills our students and staff practice throughout the school year. As a parent, you also have an important role in all of these types of drills. Please read below to become familiar with the different types of school safety drills at NESD.
Fire or EvacuationTop of Page
What does this situation mean?
In the event of a fire or evacuation, all students will be evacuated from buildings and moved to a safe evacuation assembly area. This drill is done to ensure students and staff know where to go and how to respond accordingly.
What can you do as a parent?
Talk with your child about the importance of these drills and following the instructions of staff. Should there be a real evacuation, families would be updated via our notification systems. If school is able to resume, it will. If not, parents will be notified of the reunification process. (Please see "Reunification.")
lockdownTop of Page
What does this mean?
A lockdown takes place if an internal or external threat is identified at the school. All school staff will ensure school doors are locked and students will be confined to their classrooms. No entry or exit will be allowed until an "all-clear" is called by site administration or law enforcement. Students WILL NOT be released in a lockdown. Typically, no instruction is taking place during this type of scenario, and staff and students are taking action to protect themselves. This is practiced regularly as a drill.
What can parents do?
Stay away from the school site in this situation for your own safety, and the safety of others. Your children WILL NOT be released during a lockdown situation until it is safe to do so as determined by school site administration or law enforcement. Families will be notified of the reunification process. (Please see "Reunification.")
Secure School/Shelter in PlaceTop of Page
What does this situation mean?
Students take refuge in designated areas to protect them from hazardous materials, severe weather, or a potential low-level threat around campus. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed until an "all-clear" announcement is made by school site administration or law enforcement. Students WILL NOT be released during a Lock-Out. Instruction in classes typically continues in a Lock-Out scenario, but movement outside is not permitted, or severely limited, for safety purposes.
What can you do as a parent?
Stay away from the school site in this situation for your own safety, and the safety of others. Students WILL NOT be released during a Lock-Out situation until it is safe to do so as determined by school site administration or law enforcement. (Please see "Reunification.")
ReunificationTop of Page
What Does This Situation Mean?
In the event of certain building emergencies, students leave the buildings or school site area and are relocated to an evacuation assembly area. This may be on-campus or off-campus depending on the situation. Reunification is planned by staff to safely reunite children with their parents/family members.
What are the Different Types of Reunification?
Daily Release - This is the process used daily at the school site (either during or after the school day). Nothing out of the ordinary would be expected during this type of release other than the usual school day processes.
Controlled Release- A controlled release typically means students are reunited with families in a more systematic method for some degree of safety concern. This could be a release class by class, through the front office, or a release from school later than the usual dismissal time.
Reunification- A reunification occurs after an evacuation or more serious event. During this release, students are sometimes transported or relocated to another location for safety. Parents will have a check-in area, and a check-out area to facilitate the release. A PHOTO ID WILL BE REQUIRED OF THE PARENT for student safety and they must be documented on the student's emergency information card. A reunification may take up to 6 hours depending on the degree of the event, law enforcement needs, and the cooperation of families.
What Can Parents Do?
Do not go to the school site, or interfere with the evacuation of the students from their school site to their designated evacuation area. There will be a safe reunification area location announcement where parents can pick up their children. School staff can ONLY release a student to a parent/guardian with a picture ID, and you must sign the student out with designated staff. This is to ensure safety and accountability for all students in our care. Please watch the website, personal email, and/or phone calls or text messages during this time with more detailed information on the reunification process.
